Me: “I’m off for my shower”
Hubby: “Ok babe”
Little One: “Ok babe”
Isn’t it amazing how they copy us?
There was an NSPCC advert on a while back showing a kid following its parent around and copying everything they did. It was a powerful advert.
Increasingly the little one, now 4 years old, seems to have reached that age where she copies everything we do. From the words we use and the way we use them, to the way we sit and move – everything gets copied.
And it’s pretty humbling to have this 4 year old mirror in the house.
You get to see all sorts of things in yourself that you didn’t realise were there.
I see it in the way she plays with her dolls – telling them off or encouraging them. The way she is with our cat Spud when he brings a mouse in, yelling “Take it out Spud” at him as loud as she can.
And it’s humbling because you can see what could be.
Generally I am reassured.
She is kind to her toys and loving. She often cradles them to settle them. If they hurt themselves she kisses them better. She tries to instil good values in them around behaviour.
But I can see how easily it could be otherwise. If the behaviours of the parents was different. If there was shouting. If there was hitting. I can see how that would be very easily copied.
And I am happy that she is not being brought up in a house like that.
