I read a really good book the other day on creativity
I really enjoyed this book. One line, right at the start of the book, stood out to me
“The more original your idea is, the less good advice other people will be able to give you”
As you will know from following me, when I have an idea I test it out on everyone I can to get input. This can be to do with the design of something or an approach I am going to take. In fact, it can be anything because I love input and other people’s perspective on things.
However, the core idea comes from me and because of that I can choose to listen to, or ignore, whatever advice I’m given. Sometimes I do things despite other people’s advice because I recognise that they don’t have the same picture that I do. Sometimes I know best.
And it can be tough because when you ask people for their opinions, they may be offended when you don’t listen. They may also interpret it as you not really wanting to hear what they think.
For me, this is not true. For me I have loads of ideas and sometimes I know I am on to a winner but I just need to tweak it. Sometimes from a tiny concept I can have one conversation that turns it into a really solid idea that I can action.
Because I get my energy and inspiration from others. The ideas come from me but they take shape by talking through them.
I totally love being in a creative space. Any opportunity I get I will jump in on a brainstorming session for ideas even if it’s totally for someone else. I am loving all the freedom I have right now in setting up my business and what I can do with it. I love turning ideas into actions.
This is, in fact, going to be my biggest challenge with being a therapist. How do I continue to get that energy from creativity, from working with others, from having ideas and taking action?
