Many years ago the hubby and I went all the way through the process to become foster carers. We both wanted to give kids a chance to see there was a better life out there for them.
It was an unpleasant process which seemed to be geared up for people who wanted to make money out of it. They talked about being allowed a couple of weeks off a year from the kids you fostered while you went on holiday etc. I could not comprehend the concept.
I will give a you a safe, loving home but hey, you need to go back into care for a couple of weeks while I have a holiday!
Anyway, at the end of the process they were doing everything they could to put us off because I was working and hubby would be the main carer. They said they’d give us the teenage boys who would steal from us and attack me. They said they’d dump kids on us at 2 in the morning etc.
And we’re not daft – we got the message and left it
Then we had Adam and then the little one.
Now she’s 5 and we are unlikely to have other kids (unless I win the lottery!) and my work circumstances have changed.
I know even more now about how easy it is to screw up kids. I know how to help people. And I have proved to myself that I know how to bring up a happy, well balanced kid (so far!).
And so we’ve decided to try again to become foster carers.
I contacted Barnardo’s who seem to have a far nicer attitude to doing what is best for the kids.
I have had a chat on the phone and in just over a week they will do a house visit. It looks like this time it’s going to work out.
I really hope it does. I believe we have a lot to offer kids, not just in terms of space but also understanding and love.
The little one is thrilled at the idea although has slightly misinterpreted it and is going round telling everyone (I mean everyone, the woman in the cinema, McDonalds etc) that when kids don’t have a mummy and daddy they are going to come and live with us (thanks for that hubby!) She is also spotting potentials so whenever she see’s a kid on its own she says “look they have no mummy and daddy – they need to come and live with us”
Anyway, I will keep you posted.
